Arsenal 1 – 1 Leicester | A disappointing draw for Arsenal

Jamie Vardy’s late equaliser gave Leicester City a vital point to keep their Champions League hopes on track and end Arsenal’s recent winning streak.

The Gunners looked on course for a fifth successive victory to maintain their outside chances of a place in Europe’s elite competition next season at the expense of Leicester’s similar ambitions after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang swept in his 20th league goal of the season in the first half.

Leicester keeper, Kasper Schmeichel, kept Arsenal at bay with a string of fine saves before the interval, twice denying Alexandre Lacazette as well as Bukayo Saka – and it proved to be a vital contribution.

Arsenal were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes left when Eddie Nketiah was sent off just four minutes after coming in as substitute for a high challenge on James Justin, and Leicester cashed in on their numerical advantage when Vardy slid home Demarai Gray’s cross in the 84th minute, the goal finally awarded after a lengthy VAR check for offside.

It was Vardy’s 22nd league goal of the season and restored his two-goal advantage over Aubameyang at the top of the Premier League scoring charts.

Leicester drop to fourth place, four points ahead of Manchester United having played a game more, but this was an important point that left Arsenal frustrated in seventh.

Kieran Tierney was fantastic again. He fought for every ball & delivered m great crosses tonight. His hunger and commitment is a revelation; he’s going to go a long way at Arsenal. Already a fan favourite and an automatic pick for Arteta. Expecting big things next season. 

Tierney said "Since the break, I've come back a lot better and more settled. Even in London itself, I feel a bit more settled and I think the break has done me wonders. I feel more part of the team, the boss has been great with me and I'm grateful for every single opportunity.

Arteta Said "We have to learn. When you play against this opposition, when you have them, you have to kill them off. That's the fourth time that we’ve had to play with 10 men. It’s not possible for that long against this opposition. And I didn’t like the goal we conceded.

"I'm extremely proud of our team and the way we played against this type of opposition with how dominant we were in the first half. But clearly, we should've gone three or four-nil up and killed the game. That's what you have to do with this type of opposition."
