Arsenal set date for pre-season return ahead of Liverpool clash in Community Shield

The Gunners will be back at London Colney very soon after their FA Cup triumph

It will mean the Gunners have had just 21 days of celebration and relaxation between their FA Cup win over Chelsea and their return to training ahead of what will be another gruelling season in which they compete for silverware on multiple fronts.

Indeed some of Mikel Arteta's squad will gather before next Saturday for initial fitness tests and sessions with some of those whose seasons ended earlier because they were out on loan due to report at London Colney this Friday (August 14).

The club have also provided sessions for those like William Saliba whose domestic seasons were cut short due to the coronavirus. Arsenal's youth teams have already returned to training.

Arsenal also intend to organise behind closed doors friendlies though these may come in the two week gap between the Wembley showpiece and the start of the Premier League season.

It will be a far cry from the pre-season Arsenal had initially planned, one which would have seen them play fixtures on America's east coast.

However it may come with its advantages for Mikel Arteta, whose squad will be able to spend more time on the training pitch and less on in the commercial obligations and travel that increasingly dominate top clubs' agendas before the new campaign.

Of course Arsenal's players will not get as lengthy a break as they might have hoped for, although equally many of Arteta's first team would have been involved in the European Championships or Copa America but for the global pandemic.

Their holiday period also fulfils Arsenal's minimum obligation to their squads. Standard Premier League contracts state that clubs should not "unreasonably refuse" players from taking three days of annual leave consecutively though there is an acceptance across the game that further extended breaks will prove to be impossible after COVID-19 forced the domestic season to run until August 1.

Mikel Arteta has performed another masterstroke with Bukayo Saka

The Arsenal teenager proved he can influence a game from the right-hand side in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City

Mikel Arteta deployed Bukayo Saka from the right-hand side once again against Leicester City and his decision was vindicated
It was what every fan wanted to see - Bukayo Saka in an Arsenal shirt with a pen in his hand, committing his future to the club.

The teenager has played 35 times for the Gunners this season, almost exclusively on the left-hand side. But Mikel Arteta is never afraid to experiment with systems and tactical ideas, and named Saka on Arsenal's right-hand side against Leicester City on Tuesday, a mere three days after the teenager notched a goal from the same position.

There are obvious pros and cons of such a move. Saka is naturally a left-footed player and switching him to the right could ruin the balance of the team. That certainly wasn’t what happened in the first half against Leicester, however, with Saka a constant threat.

It started a few minutes in when Kieran Tierney found Saka with a deep cross, but the England youth international was unable to get the ball under control, and it squirmed away.

What stood out quickly was Saka’s willingness to run in behind. In the 16th minute he snuck behind the Leicester defence, but Alexandre Lacazette was unable to find him with a pass.

Then in the 21st minute, he made a similar run in behind Çağlar Söyüncü and was this time able to connect with Dani Ceballos’ pass. Tasked with getting past Jonny Evans, he sat the former Manchester United defender down before calmly squaring it for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score.

Arteta could be forgiven for feeling smug. His tweak had produced an early assist, and Saka almost had a goal to his name, but Aubameyang was unable to return the favour in the 25th minute. Saka remained a creative force when he found Lacazette inside the penalty area, with the chance underpinning the fact that Saka was involved in almost everything positive the Gunners did during the opening 45 minutes.

Arsenal pair Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka following the opening goal against Leicester City.
Robin van Persie describes Bukayo Saka in three words after Arsenal star's Leicester assist
Only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has more goal contributions for Arsenal this season than Saka. What made the teenager such a threat was his willingness to exploit the space in behind Leicester’s wing-back. A study of his heatmap shows the winger consistently in the half-space, and it was from that position he caused the Foxes so many problems.

Unfortunately, he failed to carry that momentum into the second half. He completed just one pass after the break and only attempted four in total (source: Statszone) before he was substituted in the 71st minute for Joe Willock.

It would be easy to criticise the youngster, but this kind of sharp contrast is part of the territory with a young player. That is where Arteta will have to extract consistency from him in the long run. As for his future on the right-hand side, there is no issue with having a versatile attacker. The Gunners boast a variety of players that can change a game in the final third including Lacazette, Aubameyang, Saka, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli.

Accommodating all of them in one team could be difficult, which strengthens the need for versatility as it facilitates a variety of combinations. With all that said, it would not be a surprise to see Arteta persist with his experiment of Saka on the right. The early indications have been positive from playing him on the right, although realistically it is hard to imagine him moving across long-term. After all, he is best suited to the left-hand side, and given Martinelli is right-footed, it may be the Brazilian that inhabits that space in the long-term, even if Saka has shown an ability to influence a game from the right.

FIFA fines Arsenal over secret clauses in transfer deal

Arsenal have been fined £34,000 by FIFA and warned about their conduct regarding player transfers.

This follows an investigation into the transfers of Chuba Akpom and Joel Campbell in 2018.

Akpom left for Greek club PAOK, while Costa Rica forward Campbell signed for Italian side Frosinone.

However, sell-on clauses inserted in their contracts were variable, meaning if either returned to clubs in the UK, Arsenal would receive a bigger fee.

For Akpom, Arsenal would receive 40 per cent of the transfer fee if he moved to a British club, but only 30 per cent if he went elsewhere.

Frosinone would pay Arsenal 30 per cent of any fee if Campbell was sold back to the UK, but only 25 per cent if he went anywhere else.

The discovery of the sell-on clauses led to an investigation since January, having not been initially declared.

The FIFA disciplinary committee found the Gunners to be violating rules for entering into contracts that thus enabled it to influence other clubs, and also for failing to declare data in its Transfer Matching System.

Dani Ceballos has already proved Mikel Arteta should make Real Madrid loan a permanent transfer

Throughout his time as Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta has been searching for a central midfield. Granit Xhaka was immediately reinstated as the starting option on the left side of a double-pivot, but finding his partner has been more challenging.

Lucas Torreira started there at first, impressing with his aggressive, ankle-snapping style. Matteo Guendouzi was also given a run-out, though his more hair-raising approach to the position that sacrifices positional discipline in favour of high energy does not sit well with Arteta’s more stringent tactical instruction. Finally, on-loan midfielder Dani Ceballos was provided with an opportunity to show what he can do.

In the final three league matches before lockdown - wins against Newcastle, Everton and West Ham - Ceballos seemingly established his grip on the position, producing several encouraging displays as the metronomic creator and controller from deep.

Since the restart, his form has not been quite so encouraging. He was bypassed in the Brighton defeat, did not improve much against Southampton five days later, and was only given another chance because Guendouzi has fallen out of Arteta’s graces.

Nevertheless, in Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Norwich City in which Arsenal produced their best performance since football’s restart and equalled their biggest win under the new head coach, Arteta returned to the central midfield pairing that he ostensibly settled on before lockdown: Xhaka and Ceballos.

MIKEL ARTETA ON CEDRIC'S 'PERFECT' NIGHT
This time, the duo played in the heart of a 3-4-3 shape with Alexandre Lacazette dropping in from the centre-forward position to provide an extra body in midfield. It worked excellently, especially in the first half, and Ceballos was at the heart of everything positive that Arsenal did.

It started with his conductive play in possession. Growing in confidence with positive early touches, he demanded the ball from the back three and looked to play dynamic, difficult passes into the front players, breaking the Norwich lines and moving the play up the pitch.

Per FBREF and Statsbomb, Ceballos’ 379 progressive yards, that is the total distance his passes travelled towards the opposition goal, ranked second in the Arsenal team for progressive distance. Only David Luiz ranked higher.

To further put that figure into context, Xhaka, who is renowned for his range of passing, produced a total progressive distance of just 194 yards, a little over half of his midfield partner. Both played the full 90 minutes.

Thierry Henry proven right about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after setting Arsenal goal record
Ceballos’ passing statistics are sensational and they help paint the picture of just how controlling and creative he was from the base of midfield.

His 58 completed passes were the second-highest in the team. He played 11 progressive passes. No other teammate played more than six. He played seven passes into the penalty area. No other teammate played more than two. His seven passes into the final third was also a team-leading figure, tied with Xhaka, while his four shot-creating actions, defined as an action within two actions in the build-up to a shot, also led the team.

Ceballos was at the heart of everything. His 78 touches led the team, as did his 51 carries, travelling a total progressive distance of 182 yards. No other player carried the ball more than 140 progressive yards. He was charted without one miscontrol or dispossession.

It was a true deep-lying playmaker’s performance from a player who was flourishing in the role that Arteta had given him.

During the match, Arteta could be heard shouting, “Dani, espalda!” This translates as “Dani, back!” Ceballos certainly has a Guendouzi-like rawness to his play at times. Such is his energy, he hares after the ball, sometimes neglecting the discipline that is required to play in holding midfield.

On this occasion, though, he was more reserved, conservative, deeper in his starting position. This provided him with the time and space to survey the pitch and pick out his passes. It is why he ranks so highly in advanced passes into the final third, penalty area, and progressive balls forward.

But do not think he was lacking in his defensive work-rate, either. The Spaniard was combative and industrious out of possession, too. His 24 pressures ranked second only to Alexandre Lacazette. His four interceptions led the team. He also made two blocks, which ranked joint-third, and one tackle, joint-third also.

Arteta was extremely pleased with the midfielder’s dominating display, praising both his work in and out of possession.

“I really like Dani and what he brings to the team,” he said, speaking to the media in his post-match press conference . “He’s understanding what we’re trying to do really, really nicely and he has big personality to play and take the ball in any area of the field and give us the continuity that we need as a team to control the games better.

“But as well without the ball, the running that he’s putting in, the tackles, every time with the interceptions, his desire to win that ball back and help the team, he’s improved so much and he looks a really good player at the moment.”

Arteta wanted Ceballos to show more control than in previous outings. The on-loan Madrid midfielder is hugely creative. He likes to have regular touches of the ball, to dominate play, and to push into the final third when he gets the chance. Arteta, meanwhile, is attempting to channel those natural creative juices and convert Ceballos into a deep-lying, playmaking orchestrator who carries that added bite and steel that the Arsenal midfield has lacked.

In Wednesday’s win over Norwich, that is precisely the role that Ceballos played. And he played it expertly.

Arteta on Wolves, Guendouzi, Ozil: see full transcript

Arteta was asked a wide range of questions when he faced the media in a Zoom press conference on Thursday evening.

Our head coach was quizzed on Wolves' quality, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Matteo Guendouzi and more.

Read on for a full transcript:

on the positives from Norwich...
The performance for larger periods of the game, we completely dominated in the way that we wanted and I think a lot of things that we worked on actually happened. As well, the things that are evolving and have to be improved, like the 'compete' side of the team when we just give things to the opponent when the game is under total control that exposes us a little bit. But overall I think it was a very positive night.

on Emi Martinez's form...
As I said after he played his first game, Emi has been working and preparing himself for a long time. He has been very respectful with the role that he had when he was the No 2, but the circumstances of the injury to Bernd are that he is the No 1, he is performing well and doing his job and that is what he needs to try to keep doing.

on Wolves not being a 'surprise package' anymore...
I think they have shown in the past few years how consistent they have been with their performances. They are a group of players, and a club with a manager that have been doing exactly the same thing for many years and you can see their style of play, and a very clear identity of what they want to do,. They have been recruiting exactly the players they need in the positions to do what they want to do. They are a really difficult side to beat.

on the latest team news...
We had a few issues from last night, I won't mention the names but obviously we have been playing a lot of games in the last few days and some players are recovering. We will assess them tomorrow and see who is in the best condition to start and be involved in the game.

on the challenge from Wolves...
The manager has created the perfect environment for the players. I think they didn't have very big expectations but with their performances and their consistency, they have gained respect from all the teams in the league. They compete really well, a really clear gameplan of how they want to expose their opponent, very solid defensively and with some really good talent in forward positions that can win the game at any moment. A very complicated side.

on why he is positive on Aubameyang's future...
I don't know, it is the way that I feel, the way that I communicate with him, the conversations that I have with him and the people around him. It is the energy I sense. It is just my opinion, things change in football very quickly but when you ask me in that moment how I feel about Auba's future, in this moment I feel that he wants to continue with us and keep developing and help us to become a better team.

on whether the positive signs from the team will convince Auba to stay...
I think so, he needs to feel he belongs somewhere that he believes we can achieve the goals that he has individually and collectively for a long time. He is very settled in the city, his family are really happy here as well I think, and he is loved, respected and admired nay his team-mates, which is a huge thing to have at any football club. So that's what gives me positivity, as well because I see the enjoyment he is having, the work-rate that he puts in all the time, and the decisions that he makes every time. So that is where my feelings are coming from.

on whether he is interested in Thomas Partey...
I cannot talk about being interested in any players that are playing in any team that is not ours, sorry.

on what he needs to strengthen in the window...
I'm very clear. I have a very clear plan and the specificity of the players, the positions and squad balance that we need to compete with the rest of the top teams in the country.

on how Aubameyang compares to Aguero...
They have completely different qualities overall, but a very common thing which is that they have an incredible ability to put the ball in the back of the net, for sure. Very different characters, very different players. Both ruthless to train, to keep scoring goals, being annoyed if they don't do so, and an incredible talent to do the most difficult thing in football: scoring goals.

on how important it would be to keep Aubameyang...
Yeah when we played with Robin [van Persie], he used to make the difference for us every week. I always say that he was one of the strikers I most enjoyed playing with because of his intelligence, the overall quality to play around in any position in area of the field and as well the quality of his finishing and movement. Now we have the luck of having Auba and a player that can do that in any moment of the game. We have to feed him and put in the right position as much as possible in the game to help us win as much as we can.

on Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore...
They link with each other really well. Their understanding, their movement, the partnership that they have... they are a big threat. I think Raul, the way he's settled in the country and the player he's become is as well because of the structure that he has in the team that his manager has created, and the players around him as well. Adama, I know him from his time at Barcelona, and he's a player that can unlock the door at any moment in the game.
on whether he's decided if Ozil and Guendouzi will be in the squad for Wolves...
It's still to be decided.

on how much he's learned from his time in charge so far...
It's been a challenge because as you've said, so many different things have happened in six months. A big lockdown, a lot of games when I joined, a lot of games after the lockdown, very little time to train and a lot of issues to be resolved as well around the team and within the club. Gathering all the information that I can to make the best possible decisions for the future of the club, to try to improve the team as much as possible, to get to know the players that we have, the environment that we're trying to create, our culture. Hopefully step by step we'll get better.

on how close he is to getting the starting XI he wants...
I think this is something that is always in constant evaluation. Things change very quickly from one week to another. You have to see players' reactions when things are going for them or when they have a difficult moment, or bad results. It's part of the process but everyone's getting chances and the young players - not that I've given them the chance - they deserve it with the work that's they're putting in, and as well the work that the staff and academy members have done in the past with them to get them ready for the stage they are at. We are evaluating a lot of things at the moment, as well as trying to get the best possible performances and the wins that we need to climb the table.

on whether breaking down Wolves' defence is the biggest challenge this weekend...
Yes. I think a lot of teams have struggled to create anything against them. They are really, really strong defensively, very well structured, very little spaces to attack. We have a plan to try to help them, with the right players in the right spaces to try to create the chances that we need to win the game. As well, they're a team who try to counter-attack and when they are stable in the final third against the opponent, they have the players to hurt you. That's why they are very solid and consistent. They are a team that doesn't concede many and always has a good chance to win the game, and be up near the top of the table.

on big week coming up...
I think about tomorrow and preparing the best possible training session, going to Wolves and trying to win the game and seeing what happens. At the moment it's not in our hands to do anything other than win football matches and give oursleves the best possible chance in the last two or three games to see where we can get.

on if Mikel looks at the results of teams around us...
I do of course, yes.

on Adama Traore's form...
I always saw incredible potential and that he could develop and evolve certain areas of his game. He was unstoppable to play at times. When he gets service in the right moments and gets isolated, it's so difficult to defend and he is showing that in a constant way right now. Something that is not easy to do for a very talented football player.

on the league being a top two, then a following six teams...
It looks like it at the moment, what has been happening in the last two or three years suggests that but things change very quickly. Look how Liverpool have evolved in the last four or five years, United as well are looking really strong at the moment and are making a lot of right decisions, Leicester is the same. Wolves and the season they are having, I suspect they will get better so it's going to be a challenge. That gap [with Liverpool] has to be closed and for us the margin we have for improvement is still very very big.

on William Saliba...
As you know, both clubs had some conversations, at the moment they haven't reached any agreement for him to be able to play in the final. At the end of the day he is our player and we want the best for him. We want to protect him and we want him in the best possible condition for us as well when he joins us but it is something that is being dealt with at club level.

on moving any centre-backs on in the summer...
We will see because Pablo won't be available to start the season and Callum won't be available to start the season. We have nine games left until the end of the season, a lot of things can happen. William has had a lot of issues this season with injuries as well so he has not been a stable player in that sense so let's wait and see. At the moment we're going to have options and we will consider the situation with what is best to do in the future but we don't have much stability at the moment.

on having to sell players in order to bring players in...
Again, we don't know how the market is going to be. Obviously we are putting different plans together to see what we are going to be able to do. At the moment the uncertainty is still big as well, the way we are going to finish the season will dictate a lot of things financially as well so we have to be a bit patient and see what happens.

on will we see smaller transfer spend in the summer...
We have seen different things, the way Chelsea is dealing with the market is different to the rest at the moment. Bayern Munich as well have been really aggressive so I don't know. If you ask me we cannot be a team that has to sell his best player to try to bring in and improve our squad, that's for sure.

on if Granit Xhaka can be an example to Matteo Guendouzi...
We try to deal with every situation individually. Try to assess everything that has happened and try to help the player, try to improve them, try to give them the right environment and that is not different to any other player.

Ozil can be one of worst players in the world', according to Arsenal icon Merson

Paul Merson has claimed Mesut Ozil is 'one of the worst players in the world' when he doesn't have the ball.

The Arsenal midfielder has dropped out of Mikel Arteta's starting line-up – and at Manchester City, the squad – since the Premier League restarted after the coronavirus pause.

He has also not been used in either of their matches against Brighton or Southampton, and didn't make the squad as they beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Arteta has said that the £350,000-a-week German needs 'a little bit of time' before he can play again for Arsenal.

'I think Ozil is a prime example of a player who has to play in a proper team, that is going to be right up there, dominating football matches. He's got to play in a majorly successful team,' Merson told Sky Sports.

'He can't play in this Arsenal team, here's why: he's not going to change his game now in his 30s, and Arsenal aren't going to change their game for him.

'He isn't tracking back, chasing players, and you need him in a team where you're getting 70 per cent of the ball each week, and he'll play. You get players around him, let him play. We all know how Ozil plays, you give him the ball and he'll find you. If you don't have the ball, he won't win it back for you for love nor money.

'He's not interested when they don't have the ball. How can you give someone £350k-a-week when we all knew that was his style of play?

'If he hasn't got the ball he's one of the worst players in the world! I would say that. Name me a worse player in the world when their team doesn't have the ball.

'I've never seen somebody so disinterested when they don't have the ball, but he hurts you at the other end!

'Can Arsenal form a team around him? At the moment, it's at the stage where you can't do that. They're not going to change the team for him. He'll pick up his £350,000-a-week and everything is rosy for him.'

On the decision to hand Ozil a huge pay packet, Merson continued: 'They have to come to a deal with him; maybe he'll take £200k a week somewhere else. I don't know how this gets resolved though.

'Does he want to play football? If he loves football, he has to come to a deal with Arsenal, but it's easy to say that. Nobody wants to lose £150k a week, no matter how much you earn! Who is mad enough to throw that money away, no matter who you are?

All Arsenal Transfer Update This Week

EXCLUSIVE: The #Arsenal board and Mikel Arteta have come to a mutual agreement that the 2 MAIN priorities are to sign a CDM and a CB. That in no way means that other players wont be joining because they will, but the signings will be revolved around the 2 main priorities.
As things currently stand, Thomas Partey is joining Arsenal. Everything is pretty mich done and Arsenal have for some time now, known that they WILL be triggering the release clause in Partey's contract.
After they seal the Partey deal, they will look to swiftly move onto the Dayot Upamecano deal as his Release Clause expires this summer. Upamecano has decided to leave and Arsenal are his main priority as long as Arsenal have the 60 million required to complete the deal.
After Arsenal conclude those 2 deals for in the Partey and Upamecano, the rest of the signings will then depend on player sales. Arsenal wont be able to spend much more than 20-30 million on anyone after those 2 deals unless they sell some marquee players.
Besides the CDM and CB targets. The other positions they are looking to improve on are Striker (if Aubameyang/Lacazette leaves), CM/CAM (Is the the third priority on the list but if they splash big money on the CDM and CB, they will have to look for cheaper alterantives.
A Winger is also a priority but a big name signing won't occur there unless there is HEAVY movement in the squad of players that actually hold value. Players such as Lacazette, Aubameyang, Torriera, Guendouzi would have to leave for any sort of big name Left Winger to join.
Just a quick thread on #Arsenal transfers/contract news.
Aubameyang: Offer is on the table and is waiting to see if we have European football next season and show ambition in the window. He is willing to sign a new deal.
Saka: Deal is 99% done. Nothing to worry about here.
Partey: Deal will be completed. Arsenal have the money to do the deal and player is eager to move.
Upamecano: Big priority of the boards but Arteta has some reservations. Arsenal still in pole position but Arteta would still like another Left footed CB as well as him.
Grealish: Possibility of joining Arsenal is there but they almost certainly won’t be able to spend 50 million on 3 seperate players unless there is heavy movement of the big name players in the squad.
Arsenal are interested but nothing more has real happened.
Zaha: Could be an option to replace Aubameyang if he leaves but the fee would still be in the region of 50-70 million.
Edouard: If Lacazette is to leave, he is the number 1 striker target to replace him. He favours a move to Arsenal but wants first team guarantees.
Pau Torres/Gabriel: Both are at the same stage. 1 of these will very likely join but not both. Arteta favours Torres but still a long way to go in the deal.

Lacazette: Arsenal are willing to offer a new deal but isn’t a priority of the club at this current stage.
