Arteta - David Luiz has been phenomenal

Mikel Arteta never doubted David Luiz's powers of recovery - and they were on show at Wembley in our Emirates FA Cup semi-final win.

Our Brazilian defender's last encounter with Manchester City was short-lived and memorable for all the wrong reasons after an individual error that cost us a goal and a foul that earned City a penalty and himself a red card.

Fast forward a month and David Luiz was doing as much as anyone to keep City at bay at Wembley. It was a towering performance and Arteta was full of praise.

"This is part of football, you can go down but I didn't have any doubts about David's reaction," he said.

"He held his hands up after that [City] game and he didn't have to do that because we all make mistakes. The way he has been training and helping others has been phenomenal and I am delighted that people can now see this side of him as well and praise him because he deserves it.

"He has won everything in different countries so he brings that [experience] with him. Not only that but I want him to perform on the pitch and he is doing that again in a really good way and I'm really happy for him today.

"David doesn't need a lot of management," added Arteta. "What he needs is that we trust him and we don't doubt what he can do.

"The best way to do that is to make him play. He can say that throughout his career he has had some difficult moments and some incredible moments, but big athletes go through those moments and I'm happy that he's at the level he's playing now."

PRESS CONFERENCE Arteta on Aubameyang's future and a huge win

Mikel Arteta was all smiles when he sat down for his virtual press conference after Saturday's fantastic win over Manchester City - and his old friend Pep Guardiola.

Our head coach was asked about a memorable week for the club, experiencing Wembley without fans, the post-match celebrations... and, as usual, the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Read on for some of the key quotes:

on trusting the process...
Yes, we are really happy for what happened in the last four or five days, to beat probably the best two teams in Europe is not an easy thing to do. A lot of credit goes to the players for what they are doing and the performances and the level of fight and decision-making they are showing on the pitch.

on if the experience of Wembley is different without fans...
Yes, one of the best things about Wembley is the atmosphere before the game, during the game and all of the protocols that are in place on the day, but we didn't have them. Obviously we miss our fans a lot, we wanted to have a beautiful day with them but I'm sure they will have enjoyed that from home.

on the need to spend in the summer and whether winning the FA Cup could help with that…
Listen, we have had a lot of conversations and we always agreed with the plan that we have in place, and the current vision is very clear. It’s about the possibilities that we are going to have and at the moment we have some uncertainties. The way we finish the season, if we are in Europe or we win it [the FA Cup], it will obviously help because financially we will be stronger and that’s why we have to be a little bit patient.

on the celebrations in the dressing room…
They are so happy because we had a big task in front of us today against such a big team and we’ve done it, so they are really proud. The chemistry we are generating between them is fantastic and the way they are fighting for each other too. At the moment I have the feeling that I can play any of those players and they are going to respond and they are going to perform. We changed a few players from when we played on Wednesday and when we played today, and look at the way that they are performing.

on whether he would rather face Manchester United or Chelsea…
I’m going to watch the game tomorrow and use that game to get something out of it. I don’t know, it’s not our decision. We've done what we had to do today and now we need to prepare for the final against one of those opponents.

on whether nights like this will help convince Aubameyang to stay…
I think it will help everybody. These beautiful moments are always better than the bad ones and when I look at him and speak to him he sounds pretty convinced, but obviously if he can see the success and direction that we’re taking is the right one, I think he will be more positive about it, yes.

on Aubameyang’s tweet about his goalscoring record against big teams…
Yeah, but it’s like it with David [Luiz]. Big players [get criticised] more than any others and even when they do well, people are going to criticise you, but he showed today on the pitch. Not from talking, but on the pitch.

INTERVIEW Tierney - We've got each other's back

Kieran Tierney says our win over Manchester City was possible because the players are all "in it together".

Our Scotland defender put in another colossal display as we saw off Pep Guardiola's side thanks to two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a stoic rearguard action.

"I'm very proud," Tierney told Arsenal Digital.

"It's a great result for us. We knew coming in here it was going to be a tough, tough game after a tough game a few days ago, but we've had two great results.

"We've taken confidence, it was a great defensive performance and Aubameyang was brilliant as always.

"It was very tough, we were playing against one of the world's best teams. It feels good knowing that we've all got each other's back, if you go then someone is covering. You're in it together.

"It's a good feeling in the squad now, it's positive and that's all you can ask for. We've been working on that since the first day [Mikel] came in and we're getting closer to where we want to be.

"I think you always need to believe, and coming into this game as well you had to believe we could win and we did that. We take confidence, we take belief and we'll keep building on it."

Tierney won the Scottish Cup twice with Celtic and is now set for his first appearance in England’s showpiece final.

"I'll be really looking forward to it," he said. "It's probably not sunk in yet to be honest but I'm just buzzing for every single one of the boys.

"Obviously I'm gutted that the fans couldn't be here. It would have been a great occasion for them today. This one was for the fans."

INTERVIEW Arteta - We're generating some chemistry

Incredible. Proud. Thankful. The superlatives and emotions were flowing from Mikel Arteta after he masterminded our Emirates FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City.

Our head coach expressed his regret that our fans weren't at Wembley to share the moment, and he lavished praise on our players for their Herculean effort against Pep Guardiola's side, an effort that showed the chemistry and camaraderie that's being forged in the squad.

"I am really thankful to the players for the effort they are putting in, the performances they are putting in, the chemistry that they are generating," Arteta told Arsenal Digital.

"They are trying to play every week, every day. It doesn't matter, we have players with injections, players that were sick, but they're willing to play. At the moment I have a feeling that I can pick anybody that is ready to play and perform at that level.

"We made five or six changes the other day, we made the same again today and look at the level of all of the players.

"I'm so happy today. To beat [City] in a semi-final and to beat the best two teams in Europe probably in three or four days is something I am very proud of.

"I am sorry for the fans because we could've enjoyed a beautiful moment today with them. They are not here but I just want to tell them that we are thinking about them."

Arteta sprang a minor surprise by selecting Ainsley Maitland-Niles at left wing-back - but the decision paid dividends.

"Absolutely, [he was magnificent]," said our head coach. "And I was sure about that with the way he's training, the way he's changed his mentality and his mindset.

"He has everything, he has great qualities, I believe in him. I had to give him opportunities and today he took it with both arms. He had a really good performance.

"It feels incredible. I'm so proud today. To bring the club back into a final... we'll see who we will face but now we make sure we finish the league the way we should."

WHAT HAPPENED DURING ARSENAL VS MANCITY

A monumental team performance - and two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - saw us overcome Manchester City to book our place in the Emirates FA Cup final.

Our captain missed a glorious chance when he was put through by David Luiz, but made amends a few minutes later with a brilliantly-executed half-volley to steer Nicolas Pepe's cross past Ederson and in off the post.

That was the conclusion of a move that comprised 18 passes and 10 of our players. A true collective effort in keeping with the overall display.

Aubameyang was ruthless again with his only clear chance of the second half, racing onto a fine through-ball from the outstanding Kieran Tierney to finish confidently.

Shkodran Mustafi went close for us with a powerful header that Ederson tipped over but, as expected, City had most of the ball and more of the opportunities.

They dominated the first 15 minutes and we needed a string of vital blocks and clearances to keep Pep Guardiola's side at bay - with Granit Xhaka, David Luiz and Tierney to the fore.

City posed even more questions in the second half with Kevin De Bruyne doing plenty of damage after moving from the centre of midfield to the right.

But chances were squandered by Raheem Sterling and David Silva, while Emi Martinez made a great save to deny Riyad Mahrez.

City threw everything at us, but Mikel Arteta's gameplan worked perfectly.

Our players followed his instructions to the letter and a combination of discipline, determination and clinical finishing gave Arteta a famous win over his former club.

Like any team, Manchester City have some weaknesses too — Arteta

'Like any team, they have some weaknesses'

The stats don't make for pleasant reading for Mikel Arteta ahead of our Emirates FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester City.

But our head coach is not interested in history, and is confident that we have the players at our disposal to exploit his former club's weaknesses.

This is what Arteta told the media on Friday:

on whether he can target Manchester City’s weaknesses…
That’s what we will try to do as much as possible. Like any other team, they have some weaknesses as you mentioned and as well, it’s about stopping their strengths, which they have a lot of. This is part of any gameplan, it’s not about City or any other opponent that we’re facing, and on Saturday we will do exactly the same.

on knowing Arsenal's weaknesses from his time in the coaching team at Man City...
Well, it's a different team and we are a different team as well. I know their strengths and I know the flexibility they have and the things that they are going to try. But even like that, sometimes it is very difficult to stop them. I want to focus on what we want to do. If I worry too much about them, it's not the message that I want to send to the players. It's what we are going to do and what we have to do to try to win the game, to give us the best chance to compete against them throughout the 90 minutes and put them under difficulties. That is what I will do and that is the game plan we always put against every team.

on whether he is worried by City winning all of our last seven meetings...
Yes. But if I look at the trends as well before we played Liverpool, with the calendar year or the last two calendar years that they've had, you get depressed. What I need now is energy to transmit to my players, belief and it's the FA Cup - we have a lot of experience here and we have a history related to that. Let's go for it.

on David Silva's legacy in English football and if he is under-appreciated globally...
If I could read the articles and the comments when he joined the Premier League, they were saying that player is so small, he doesn't have the physicality, he won't adapt. What David has done in this league has been incredible. Again, the level of consistency to play the way he has done with the amount of goals, assists and chances that he creates every single season, in tight spaces against very low blocks, time and time again, is incredible. I always said - and I agree with what Pep said - in shorter spaces, he's the best player that I've seen.

on whether the Liverpool victory sets us up nicely for City...
Unfortunately yes [City are going to have a lot of the ball]. We had a really good reaction after the goal [we conceded against Liverpool]. It's not easy because they are such a dominant team, so I'm really pleased with the result that we got. They're going to be very different games and it's going to happen tomorrow as well, you cannot expect to be dominant for 90 minutes. I don't want to be defending deep for 90 minutes either. There are going to be a lot of little games within that game that we have to play. We'll have our moments as well and you know how crucial it is in big games and in this competition to make the right decisions. I expect not a similar game but the level of difficulty will again be really, really high.

Arsenal Player Ratings Vs Liverpool: Sturdy Holding, Influential Lacazette Get 8; 7/10 Or Higher For 6 Others

Rob Holding, David Luiz and Emiliano Martinez were among the top performers as Arsenal churned out a shock 2-1 win over Liverpool on Wednesday.
Arsenal bounced back to winning form in the most unexpected way possible, securing a 2-1 win over newly-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool.

On a night when Mikel Arteta rested most of his key players in light of the upcoming FA fixture against Manchester City, the Gunners were rather fortunate after initially conceding a 20th-minute goal to Sadio Mane.

Indeed, the north London giants were virtually gifted a way back into the game when Virgil van Dijk made a horrendous error around the half-hour mark to allow Alexander Lacazette to reap the rewards, as the Frenchman calmly put the ball in the back of the net.

Liverpool committed another error just before half-time – this time through Alisson, whose poor clearance went straight to Lacazette. The Arsenal striker cleverly crossed the ball towards Reiss Nelson, who made it 2-1, with the goal being enough to help the Gunners seal a famous victory despite some intense second-half pressure from the Reds.

And here, at The Hard Tackle, we will run the rule over the Arsenal players following their win over Liverpool on Wednesday evening.

Emiliano Martinez: 7.5/10
During the first phase of the game, Emiliano Martinez’s rather careless attempted long ball was blocked by Roberto Firmino and the rebound hit the bar before going out of play. That was the only mistake from an otherwise excellent performance from the Argentine, between the sticks for Arsenal.

Indeed, Martinez was solid with his claims, while his handling was top-notch. His extraordinary save in the final minute of the game was the highlight of his performances since the injury of Bernd Leno.

Rob Holding: 8/10
Replacing Shkodran Mustafi in central defence, Rob Holding put in an outstanding effort against Liverpool. His unrivalled work-ethic and aerial prowess made it easier for Arsenal to deal with the long balls, with the defender also making numerous blocks to help preserve his side’s slender lead. Certainly a candidate for being the man of the match.

David Luiz: 7.5/10
David Luiz wasn’t as effective as Holding during the defensive phases. But the Brazilian played a key role in organising the Arsenal backline that somehow managed to repel an attacking onslaught from the Liverpool side throughout the course of the second half.

Kieran Tierney: 7.5/10
Kieran Tierney ought to have done a better job of keeping track of Mane running into the box in the first half. That was the only minor blip in an otherwise brilliant defensive effort from the Scot. He was focused and his communication with both Luiz and Holding caught the eye.

Cedric Soares: 5/10
Starting at the expense of the influential Hector Bellerin, Cedric had massive boots to fill at right wing-back. He didn’t exactly excel at the job and should have been a little more proactive in stopping the cross from the right flank for the Liverpool goal. He was subbed off during the final phase of the game.

Lucas Torreira: 4/10
It was always going to be a difficult outing for Lucas Torreira, who was starting a game for the first time in six months. He duly struggled in imposing his dominance in the middle of the park, often getting isolated by the Liverpool midfielders. His substitution in the second half was a good decision by Arteta.

Granit Xhaka: 7.5/10
Much like Torreira, Granit Xhaka had difficulties in imposing his presence in midfield. However, the Swiss international soldiered on till the very end, with his courage and determination epitomising Arsenal’s performance during the defensive phases against Liverpool. The former Arsenal captain also impressed in his passing game when he was given enough time to thread one.

Bukayo Saka: 4/10
A forgettable evening for Bukayo Saka, who was given very little autonomy on the left flank. He spent most of the time trying to keep tabs on Trent Alexander-Arnold and did not get the chance to showcase his offensive prowess at all.

Reiss Nelson: 7/10
When Nelson was subbed off just before the hour mark, he had already done his job, having forced van Dijk to make an error for the first goal while scoring the second one himself thanks to some excellent composure. Aside from the goals, however, it was a rather quiet evening for the Englishman.

Alexandre Lacazette: 8/10
Lacazette was barely given a chance to showcase his attacking potential, with Liverpool dominating the possession. However, the Frenchman’s excellent finish for the first goal and the cross to feed Nelson for the second goal turned out to be quite a difference maker between the two sides. A top effort from Arsenal’s skipper on the day. A possible turnaround brewing after a difficult season?

Nicolas Pepe: 5/10
Nicolas Pepe had to endure the entire ninety minutes despite showing obvious signs of fatigue. He barely had the opportunity to properly initiate an Arsenal attack, but that did not deter the Ivorian from putting pressure on the Liverpool centre-backs and forcing them to commit to forward balls earlier than what was ideal.

Substitutes
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: 5/10
Replacing Nelson just before the hour mark, Aubameyang offered fresh legs in Arsenal’s first line of the press, however nonexistent it may have looked. The Gabonese most notably created a decent opportunity for the Gunners in the very final minute of regulation time.

Dani Ceballos: 6/10
Dani Ceballos sparked more energy in the Arsenal midfield after replacing Torreira in the 57th minute. His presence also allowed Xhaka to be much more proactive in the defensive side of the game.

Joe Willock: 5/10
Willock did not make much of an impact after replacing Lacazette. He also wasted an excellent chance late in the game with his half-volleyed effort going way off target. The technique was missing.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles: 7/10
Ainsley Maitland-Niles was quite useful on the right flank, where he provided much more energy and athleticism than Cedric. His expert defending to prevent Mane from having a shot on goal was one of the key moments in the second half.

Sead Kolasinac: N/A
Kolasinac replaced the tiring and the rather ineffective Saka in the 85th minute and offered aggression on the left flank. Did not play enough to warrant a rating, though.

Arsenal head coach discussed facing the champions, Mesut Ozil, Emi Martinez's form and more.

Arteta on Liverpool, Ozil, FFP: full transcript
Mikel Arteta was quizzed at length about a range of subjects on Tuesday when he faced the media ahead of our game against Liverpool.

Our head coach discussed facing the champions, Mesut Ozil, Emi Martinez's form and more.

Read on for a full transcript:

on picking the team up after the north London derby...
It was tough, obviously they know what it means to everybody in that type of games. They felt disappointed because the way the game went, they feel that they deserved much more but as well the reflection of the game is that we lost it basically. But they are ready, they know the games are coming up in the next few days are massive for us and the future of next season as well and they are willing to try again and put in the same effort and commitment.

on how the FA Cup semi-final will influence his team selection for Liverpool...
We have to go game by game, today we will know more as well about how the players have recovered. Obviously some players have had huge demands since we rejoined the season and have played a lot of minutes, and you can see that recovery-wise with the schedule that we have been given by the Premier League, to play every two and a half days, but we will asses them today and tomorrow and put the players on the pitch who are in the best possible condition to compete and try to win the game again.

on trying to address the defensive frailties...
It is a collective game, but within that there are a lot of individual games that happen and a lot of sequencing throughout the 95 minutes that we play. Individual errors are part of football, you can make them and they can go unnoticed if something doesn't happen, and obviously those resulting in a goal the highlight goes there. I am not concerned about that, that is something we will sort. Obviously short term it is more difficult to do it, what happens after you make an individual error, how you react to that, how you keep trying and your mindset to keep continuing the game to try to put that one back and try to resolve the situation and win it. It is not just the player who makes the individual error, but the rest have to react to try to help the player who has done it. But yes, we got punished big time the other day with that and we have to learn - and you know that teams are expecting that sometimes as well, and wee cannot give them anything.

on how different it is without fans in stadiums...
A different game, I will say it like this. The crowd affects many situations, the crowd doesn't allow the team that is playing at home to have certain behaviours during the game because it is asking all the time, demanding the home team to act in a certain way, it puts pressure on players when they have the ball and when they don't have the ball and as well it gives a different energy to the whole game. The passion, the moments before the game when you are in the warm up, is a completely different game and hopefully we can have [the fans] back with a very safe environment for them. I understand it is going to be a very slow process for them, but hopefully we will get there.

on Financial Fair Play...
There is no question about what happened. They completely deserved to be in the Champions League because what they have done on the pitch is unquestionable. The regulators have looked at it and have decided that they haven't done anything wrong so you have the two aspects that are really clear and transparent. They are going to be in the Champions League because they deserve it for what they have done on the pitch and what they have done outside of the pitch.

on good possession in the north London derby...
I am not too concerned about the possession, it's about how we attack the opponent's box, how we generate situations to score goals, the dominance, how quickly we regain the ball, how close we do that to the opponent's goal. It tells you how far we've come to be able to do that in an away ground against one of our biggest rivals. It shows the personality and what the team wants to do and it's going to be a big part of our identity. But we are going to finish that having produced the three points and had the security that we can control and dominate games against any opponent.

on if Jurgen Klopp is the model for how to build a club...
Yeah. What they have done is phenomenal, obviously the first two years it took them some time to rebuild the squad and to create a new culture, a new philosophy and a game model that suited the coach. Then they started to recruit every single player in relation to what they needed and that's where I think they were really smart. They bought with specificity for every position that was required. Financially they had a big backing and made some big signings which completely changed the club in my opinion.

on Liverpool still fighting for a record points total…
You look at the last game and the way they’ve played and the line-ups they’re putting out, you can tell that they’ll be coming here with full commitment to try and win the points. The result that they had at City, when you look back at the game it could have been completely different and you cannot question the attitude or energy of that team in any game or any minute. That’s probably one of the non-negotiable that they have and you can see that in every game.

on whether his current job is similar to when Klopp joined Liverpool…
If you ask me that question in four years and we’re both sitting here and I can tell you ‘yes, we’ve done it’, I will be so happy. But I know how many decisions have to be right and how much support you need from the club and the people around, and how much connection you to have to generate from your fans to have the full package, and afterwards it’s football. The context right now is different to what it was as well four years ago and the abilities for a club to rebuild something is more limited, but it’s certainly something we have to look at and how they did it because it’s a great example. But we have to know that we have to do it our way with our resources and have it in mind that the content right now is different, but we are heading to be the best and this is my only objective with this club. We have to find a way to do it.

on how much no European football could impact the club’s finances…
European football gives you more financial resources, that is clear, and we are going to keep trying until the end of the season to try and achieve that. After that, we will assess where we are and what our capabilities are to recruit, to maintain the players that we have and maintain the structure that we have in place at the moment at the club, and move forward from there.

on whether he will rest players against Liverpool so they’re ready for Manchester City…
I believe that it’s very important to have energy and momentum going into important matches, and in order to do that you have to go game by game. Today and tomorrow we will asses the players and how they are, and obviously they’ve been hit and a lot of them have played some crazy minutes up until now and again we’re going to have games every two and a half days. We will try to put the strongest team out as possible here and as well on Saturday, and to do that we need to know how everyone recovers from the game.

on Emi Martinez’s form and whether it’s surprised him…
Well, in terms of Emi’s character and his goalkeeping ability, I didn’t have any question marks. The way he trains every day, behaves and has been behaving since he’s been at the club is phenomenal. He was a question mark over how he was going to do because he didn’t have any Premier League experience and how he can deal with that game after game, and he’s shown that he’s more than ready to do it. He’s earned his place now, he’s doing really well and he’s playing with a lot of confidence. In key moments he’s been really helpful and he needs to continue to do that. It’s a marathon, a long run, and a football club like this demands that every day you’re at that level. That’s why he needs to keep going.

on the schedule...
We played 11 games and we only had the advantage in one, which was against Spurs. In the rest, the other teams had at least 24/36/48 hours more than us. But look at the boys, they keep going, they go full gas. It doesn't matter and we will do it again. We cannot complain because it doesn't matter. They're not going to change it. The fixtures are already there, so we will keep going and try our best.

on not expecting tomorrow's game to be a 0-0...
Well, I don't know what kind of game it will be! Obviously when you look at the front players that you just mentioned, goals are there. But football is so unpredictable. Let's see. We will try to keep it nil on our side and try to score as many as we can. That's all we can do.

on whether Mesut Ozil will play again this season...
With Mesut the situation is still the same as it was.

on whether he thinks Arsenal can mirror Liverpool and challenge for a title in four years from now...
I don't want to talk about four years in football. It's almost impossible. You have to see a trend and you have to see movement and you have to see that the direction that you are taking is the right one and that you are making progress all the time. At the end of the season we are going to have to assess where we are in all terms of the club, what is the ambition and where we want to head in. In order to do that, either the ambition and the level is equal or it's not realistic or it's more than realistic. That's what we have to get a deal on.

on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and whether his move has been vindicated...
It's easy to say that right now but in the moment you have to understand all of the circumstances. I don't know what Alex wanted to do in his career at the time, or the situation with the club or how the negotiations were. I don't have all the information surrounding that. We all could see the potential of Alex and where he could develop. He picked an incredible club to move to and he wanted a challenge probably after so many years here. We have to accept that and I think we all wish him the best because as well as being a great player, I think he was someone who was really, really liked here amongst the fans, the staff and the players.

on fan speculation on whether Ozil will play again this season...
I don't know. At the moment, the situation remains the same. We will see if that changes.
